Vision system isn’t new in automotive robotics but, because of its great reliability and low costs, it is gaining greater penetration and there are a lot of possible quality enhancements. In Rick Youngblood and Roberta Nelson Shea’ s ideas, two important character in different automation industries, vision system can be employed in the field of chassis assembling and safety driving. More robots are vision-ready, which allows users to simply plug in a camera. Adil Shafi, president of Shafi, explains that there are only two requirements for a robot to work with vision and to see things randomly in space: we need to be able to talk to the vision sensor, either through a PC or directly to the sensor, and secondly, we need to be able to see that the robot updates its location when it’s given some feedback by vision. Therefore these robots become good to adapt their application to different environments. This is the first pace to a massive adoption, final purpose of an industry which is improving this technology toward cheaper and much more precise and reliable robots. Moreover every industry will give users software of developing and controlling making easier use and giving the user a fundamental autonomy. There are some difference between how vision was before and how vision is developing. Some years ago it use correlation-based pattern matching which relied on light levels, and that was very, sensitive to changes in lighting and appearance. Now algorithms have been improved to find the 3D position and orientation of parts, there are higher levels of integration that are emerging between robots and vision. Vision system can revolutionize especially the welding phase in every vehicle building sector. “They are starting to look towards better weld quality and tracking of welds, logging the quality of the spot-welding and being able to track that to particular vehicles”, Michael DeWitte, sales director for Kuka Robotics, says. The maturation of vision system technology is opening new avenues for industrial robots. In the future we can expect greater integration between robots and vision to combat the darkening economic landscape.  more

Resolved Question: Does changing the past alter the future?

Just recently I watched the Terminator- the Sarah Connor Chronicles, and started wondering about time-space travel. A huge plot hole in the tv series is that they never explained how traveling back in time to change the past can alter the future. I've heard of a theory that time is linear, meaning that if someone from now traveled back to 2001 to stop the twin towers from being attacked, the fact that our twin tower fell remains for our 2009 time line, opposite to what the movie Butterfly Effect lead us to believe everything changes in the future when you alter the past. If altering the future is possible from changing the past, the robots, or machines, could have sent a robot capable of reproducing itself way back in time, like early 1900s or late 1800s, where technology is primitive, but industrial machinery had began to take flight, and resources are abundant. It can take over the world before John Connor(the main protagonist in the movie/tv seriese Terminator) or even any of his early ancestors were born. It could also lead to a series of problem for John, because if one of him(any John at every period of time) dies in a past time line, that means he will die in the future, and all is lost. I want some opinions on time-space travel and the consequences for such action. What do you believe would happen?  more

Resolved Question: What is the title of this space cartoon (maybe anime) movie?

There was a movie that was shown on television, and when I saw it, it was approximately early to mid 1990's. The setting was in space. The characters were mostly women. There were approximately 5 or so main characters shown. 4 older teenagers to young adults and one child. The child was an android, but no one really knew until she died. The order of deaths are not exact. However, each and every one of the characters except for two died. One died battling robot-things--(I believe they were, but not sure) and was wandering in space with something/someone (the person carrying her is unknown to me, since my memory is quite vague). The next known person to die was I believe the young girl. She dies trying to fix the ship, but ends up ruining it--maybe--instead. The final death was a girl whom decides to stay behind to get answers from the talking computer. She ends up getting her answers, but as a result dies, because the ship explodes. The main protagonist and the final girl survive and somehow end up on a unknown planet (which soon ends up being earth eventually). The girl meets and falls in love with the I believe the only guy character, and they produce, which to everyone is a big shocker, because they never knew that it was possible apparently. I don't know what happens next but eventually earth is developed into all those industrial, car stuff etc. and each of the ones who died in battle is brought back through reincarnation. Oh, another thing, which may not be necessary to note, but the main protagonist had a habit to have a shower after each of her friends deaths. except for the girl no one knew was an android, she hated her, thinking she shouldn't be trusted, don't remember why. Anyways please, if anyone can tell me the title of this movie it would be quite appreciated. Please don't say it is Galforce or whatever, unless you are 100% sure, because I am quite positive it isn't. Besides the graphics are quite--well kind of like the ones when you watch the original land before time movie, or the first final fantasia movie or something. Electricians were the ones that made our daily lives as easy as they are now. An electricians work is not all cookie - cutter. It requires some amount of skill that cannot be taught in a classroom. "Less than 5% of all Washington state electricians have a bachelors degree or higher" (wois.org). Most of the electricians go through an apprenticeship program, following a two year professional - technical school. Then they attend a four year on-the-job apprenticeship. They may also be trained through the military. Training lasts for 25 weeks depending on their specialty. To become apprentice, they must have a high school diploma or GED. They must also have a college level algebra class with a "C" or better. To become professionally licensed, they must get a high score on an electrical trade's aptitude exam. They must also have 8000 hours under direct supervision of a journeyman - level electrician. 4000 of the hours must be industrial or commercial work. They may also obtain a license by equivalent verified training in the military if they pass the licensing test. Almost all of the fields in the service industry cannot be done by a robot. The electrical field is one of them. Half of becoming an electrician is knowledge, the other half consists of skills, abilities, and physical demands. Some of the demands vary from simple things like using their fingers to assemble small objects, to being physically active for long periods of time. Different types of abilities they need range from multitasking to judging cost, to having quick and accurate math skills. Being an electrician, there is not a lot of grueling, backbreaking work. It is mostly just wires and electrical components. It is usually a 40 hour a week schedule. Also there are many opportunities for overtime and on-call work. The national median yearly salary for electricians for $44,780. The benefits they receive vary by who they are hired for. Many jobs are found by electrical contractors, self employed, temporary worker agencies, and automobile manufacturers. "In addition to jobs created by the increased demand for electrical work, many openings are expected over the next decade as a large number of electricians retire" (bls.gov). There will be very many job opportunities for new electricians. The ones who have already been in the field will most likely take the place of the older, more expirienced workers who retire which will leave the entry openings available. A more exact statistic from wois (The Washington State Career Information System) states that; "Between 2006 and 2016, the number of new jobs to open up in this occupation in Washington State is expected to increase by 14.8%. It is estimated that 259 openings annually will be due to new positions, and 481 openings annually will be from workers leaving this occupation" (wois.org). So there should not be any problem for new workers to find a job when there are 740 jobs per year just in Washington State. Electricians are needed in every state, continent, and country. There would be many opportunities for moving to another place if the electrician wanted to travel. The person who I decided to be my live source for my culminating project was Seth Cooper. When Seth first started becoming an electrician he went to school for three hours a night, two days a week in Boise, Idaho. The rest of the time he was an apprentice working at a hospital making 50 percent of that of a journeyman electrician at the time, which was $12.25 an hour. It was a very different dream compared to my other dream.... i don't know exactly where it started, but i was either in or playing this guys video game, that was really unnerving because the whole game was going through barren shelves and narrow corridors trying to avoid this creepy robot thing, and everything was a dark marroonish color or grey,very industrial type of look, metal. Can ring guards (shrouds) that prevent accidental operation legally be installed on emergency stop pushbuttons on industrial machinery in the United States? ANSI/RIA 15.06 clearly prohibits this, but this particular application (let's call it a conveyor system) does not have a robot. ANSI B11.19 and OSHA both refer you to the NFPA 79, which basically states that they must be readily accessible. Verbiage like "readily accessible" leaves a lot to a matter of opinion. When at your local China-Mart do you ever look to see if the products you buy are made in the USA. I know many people do not care where the products they buy are made and that cost is most important, but there are many side effects to this thoughtless buying. I will admit that I never thought about the impact of buying import until I got into the business of robotics. I make a living buying and selling used industrial robots. I have worked very hard to try and help companies cut there cost by installing robots. Installing robots in there factory can greatly increase there production and reduce labor cost. I know that many people think robots take american jobs but it is better for a few jobs to be lost to robots then to have all jobs lost to low cost labor. I believe that this country is built on the middle class worker. They have to be saved. DO WE SUPPORT THE USA???  more

Resolved Question: Dance Floor Etiquette - Unwanted advances?

I was bored at a goth/ebm/industrial night club until one of my favorite songs came on and I chose to dance to it. I found a space and was enjoying the song. Then some small guy approached and moved around kind of doing a robot or stiff dance. Then he tried backing into me. I moved thinking it was an accident or drunken behavior. He then tried moving into my thigh again. I moved a second time. He tried to move his butt toward me again. Ok. This *has* to be intentional. So I placed my left hand on his back and shoved him away. I then moved again. He did it one more time. I gave him another (harder) shove. "Get away from me," I yelled. I looked at his face. He had a vacant stare and left the dance floor. I felt I defended my boundaries but having worked in a club I know what women are supposed to do is tell the bouncer and not take matters into their own hands. I didn't do that and now I worry I could possibly be accused of gaybashing. This ever happen to you ?  more

Iran, aside from developing nuclear weapsons, why is this country becoming so powerful. Where are they getting the money, and the knowledge, to developed iran into a economic and military power? Iran out produces any country in the region in manufacturing, the stock market and in military clout. It also has the largest stock of industrial robots in that region. It's also producing 900 class Mercedes-Benz engines and exporting these iranian made products to europe. You know whats so funny, they kept their economy closed to foreign investments and transform it by state planining, stealing a page from the soviet union. They are a direct descent from german people. Most of their military hardware are exported to nato nations. Saudi Arabia has more money and western nations by its side, but it doesn't come close to what the iranians habor in their country. History will repeat itself. By the way, i am not iranian.
